English-English Glossary - Foundry

Hello, Blog readers!

Each week, as highlighted in the last posting, we will be posting about largely used terms over the Integrator Project course.

This week's entry is foundry.

The foundry entry, accordingly to the Centro de Informação Metal MecânicaⒸ (Metal Mechanics Information Center) is the "fabrication process that consists in scooping (pouring) liquid metal in a mold containing a cavity for the final piece wanted geometry. The metal [therefore] hardens itself in the mold interior, assuming the desired shape".

Foundry is the more widely used term; however, it may be mistaken for the installation (both the process and the place where it takes place have the same name). Its synonymous are smelting (its etmology is linked to forge processes) and fusion, that brings up the technical entry for material's melting.

We're done here! We hope this post's information was useful!

Until next week!

Best regards,
Solarium Engineering Team
